Ten-digit dialing

The demand for phone numbers will soon exceed those possible using seven digits. Ten-digit dialing permits more number combinations.

What you need to know

  • In areas where ten-digit dialing is required for all local calls, you need to dial the three-digit area code and the seven-digit phone number.

  • You won't be required to change your existing seven-digit telephone number, only add the three-digit area code.

  • The geographic boundaries that govern long distance haven't changed.

  • All three-digit numbers, including 211, 311, 411, 611, 811, 911 emergency service (where applicable) remain the same.

  • If your area has ten-digit dialing, ensure all of your communications equipment and systems reflect it:

    • Speed-dial lists

    • Modems and Internet connections

    • Telephones, including call options and functions such as Call Forwarding

    • Computers and fax machines

    • Databases

    • Auto-dial systems

    • Mobile devices

    • Alarm company
