Avoid accidental charges when you travel

Your phone or smartphone can consume data even if you're not using it while it's turned on. This can happen when your phone or smartphone is receiving pushed email, or when applications update automatically (for example, a weather app which updates a forecast).

You can avoid accidental data charges while you travel by disabling the data connection on most phones or smartphones. To learn how to disable the data connection or your phone or smartphone, do the following:

1. From our Device Selector tool, select your phone or smartphone.
2. Click How to....
3. Click Manage my device.
4. If your phone or smartphone has this capability, follow the instructions in the topic titled Turn off data connection.
