Update software on the web
The simplest and easiest way to update BlackBerry software for those using only personal email (BIS).
The simplest and easiest way to upgrade your BlackBerry smartphone software is by updating the software via the web. Web software update should be used if you are using your BlackBerry device for personal email, also known as the BlackBerry Internet Service (for example, you access your Gmail account on your BlackBerry ).
Web software update should be used only if you are using personal email known as BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).
- Visit www.blackberry.com/upgrade or www.blackberry.com/update from your computer.
- Select 'Check for Updates'.
- Select 'Run' (this may take a few minutes).
- Select "Run" again to begin installing the required software.
- If you are asked to install Adobe software, select 'Ignore', as it is not required.
- Plug the smartphone into the USB port on your PC using the programming cable included with your BlackBerry.
- A screen will appear asking for your 'PIN' and 'PASSWORD'. This is your chosen device PIN and password (if applicable).
- Enter your password if you have chosen one. If you have yet not set a password, leave the password field blank and click 'Next'.
- The update summary page will appear. IMPORTANT: You can change application or backup/restore options on this page.
If you wish to install all applications and want a backup/restore performed, click 'Next'.
- The next screen asks if you want to receive an email whenever an upgrade is available. Select 'Yes' and fill in the info, or 'No' to continue.
- Select 'Finish'.
- The software update is now taking place and may take up to 30 minutes.
- Once the update is complete, you will see the message "The loading operation was successful."
- Unplug the smartphone and click 'Close'.
Update using BlackBerry Desktop Manager Windows
Update using Desktop Manager if you are using both personal email (BIS) and corporate email (BES). Also allows for backup of data to your computer for later recovery.
BlackBerry Desktop Manager may also be used to upgrade your BlackBerry smartphone software. BlackBerry Desktop Manager software will need to be installed on your computer in order to use this upgrade path. Using this method, you can back up the data on your BlackBerry smartphone and save it to your computer for later recovery. BlackBerry Desktop Manager may be used if you are using personal email (BlackBerry Internet Service) or corporate email, known as BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).

Desktop Manager software is available on the BlackBerry Desktop Software CD included with your device. The CD contains an installation wizard that guides you through the installation process. You can also download BlackBerry Desktop Manager by visiting www.telusmobility.com.
How to install BlackBerry Desktop Manager for PC:
- Visit www.telusmobility.com and select the "Support" tab.
- Select your BlackBerry device model.
- Select "Blackberry software" in the Software downloads section. A "Software Download for TELUS Mobility" page will open.
- In the drop down menu, select "BlackBerry Desktop Software v5.0" and click "Next".
- A "Download Instructions" page will appear. Select "Download" (You can choose to download the software with or without the Media Manager application).
- Fill in the required fields in the RIM privacy policy form to proceed. Select "Next".
- Read the "Eligibility Declaration" and select "Agree" to accept the terms. Select "Next".
- Select "Download". Download the software to a location of your choice on your computer (It is recommended that you download the software to your desktop to easily locate the file once it has been downloaded.
- Once the download is complete, locate the saved file and double-click it.
- Follow the onscreen installation prompts (see the chart below for recommended selections).
How to back up your data using BlackBerry Desktop Manager
- You will first need to download and install BlackBerry Desktop Manager software. Please see the BlackBerry Desktop Manager installation steps listed above.
Backing up your device data
- Once you have downloaded and installed BlackBerry Desktop Manager, plug your BlackBerry into your computer and launch the BlackBerry Desktop Manager application.
- Select Backup and Restore.
- Select Backup.
- In order to easily find the backup file, save the file to your Desktop.
Restoring your device data
- Plug the BlackBerry into your computer and launch the BlackBerry Desktop Manager application.
- Select Backup and Restore.
- Select Restore.
- Select and open the backup file created.
- Select Yes to proceed.
How to update your BlackBerry using Desktop Manager for PC:
- Once downloading is complete, plug the BlackBerry into your computer and launch the "Desktop Manager" application. Desktop Manager will automatically check for device software updates. If an update is available, an "Application Updates Available" window will appear.
- Select "Update Now" to proceed. If no updates are found, you can launch the application loader from the Desktop Manager home menu, and then select "Start" from the Update Software section and follow the onscreen prompts.

How to install BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac OS:
- Visit www.blackberry.com and select Software.
- Select BlackBerry Desktop Software.
- Select Blackberry for Mac.
- Select “Download”.
- Download the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.dmg file to the Mac.
- Mount the disk image by double clicking on it.
- Double click BlackBerry Desktop Manager.mpkg and select Continue.
- Introduction and Read Me screens will appear. Select Continue on both screens.
- Select the appropriate Country and then select Continue after reading the License Agreement.
- Select Install.
- Once the install is complete, select Restart to reboot the Mac.
How to back up your data using BlackBerry Desktop Manager
