| Frequently Asked Questions
What is Autotel?
Autotel is B.C.'s well-proven mobile radio network serving many remote
areas and travel routes. It is ideally suited for people who work or live
in remote, rural or marine settings.
What are Satellite services?
Satellite service provides customers with wireless communications in
areas outside regular Autotel and Cellular coverage areas.
TELUS Mobility has teaming arrangements with one satellite solution provider:
- Globalstar
Canada offers handheld phones for voice
or data communications with international Roaming capabilities around
the world, with service in 70 countries including America, Mexico, Brazil
and Europe.
For more information on how to get satellite service contact Globalstar.
Why should I consider Autotel versus Cellular?
Autotel service is designed for people working or living in remote areas
of BC. Although TELUS Mobility's Cellular coverage is extensive, Autotel
reaches areas that cell phones cannot. Please see our Autotel coverage
map for specific details on where you can use Autotel services.
How does Autotel work?
Autotel service is divided geographically into Mobile Service Areas (MSA's).
When you purchase an Autotel mobile telephone you are assigned a telephone
number in the area closest to your community of interest. When you drive
within range of radio channels in a different MSA, your Autotel mobile
radio will indicate "SIGN-IN."
When you "SIGN-IN," the network will automatically forward incoming calls
to your new location. You can place outgoing calls whether you are signed
in or not.
Where does Autotel have coverage?
TELUS Mobility offers Autotel coverage throughout BC,
concentrating on rural and remote areas such as Vancouver Island, the
BC coast up to Prince Rupert and Masset, the Interior and central BC.
There is also coverage available in some areas of Northern BC. Please
see our Autotel
coverage map for specific details.
