Administration enhancements

The Microsoft Exchange BES version 4.1 provides many enhancements to make supporting and managing BES easier, and the ability to easily create BlackBerry client applications that integrate with Web Services.

* Feature updates from BES 4.1 to 4.1.2

  • Common Administration Console for All Platforms
    BlackBerry Manager
    • Common interface for managing BlackBerry.
    • Leverage BlackBerry manager Admin console from Domino & GroupWise for Exchange as well
  • Role Based Administration
    • Role-Based Administration will allow IT Administrators to assign specific roles to a set of administrators. Those administrators will have access to only applicable functions when they log in to the BlackBerry Manager.
  • Group Administration
    • Ability to create groups of users to ease administrative tasks
      • Ability to assign properties and tasks to groups such as: IT Policies, Email Filters, MDS Access Control, Redirection, PIM Sync, Send bulletins to groups, Auto signature etc.
      • IT Administrators will have the ability to specify which applications are required, allowed and prohibited; required applications are pushed to the device and installed wirelessly.
    • Seamless user moves between BlackBerry Enterprise Servers.
    • Compatibility for Office Communicator – Office Communicator will be replacing the Windows Messenger IM client. This is a tool used primarily for corporate internal communication *
    • Compatibility for Sametime v7.5 – SameTime is IBM's Instant Messaging client for internal corporate communication. BES 4.1.2 will support the upgraded version of SameTime.*
    • Large Attachment Support –An organization can control the size of attachments that can be uploaded to the BlackBerry device. BES administrators can increase or decrease this size limit *
    • IT Policy “Cloning” – IT policy values/parameters do not have to be re-generated; rather, they can be cloned for faster set-up of a similar IT Policy.
    • Novell's GroupWise (GW) 7.0 Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) Application Programming Interface (API) – The Novell GroupWise client was limited in terms of functionality to only support 500 users. With support for the new 7.0 version using SOAP, this extends the number of supported clients to 2000 instead of 500.
    • Database replication to deploy BES database for a disaster recovery scenario – Database replication means data is redundantly stored to a secondary database. This way, the BES Administrator can configure the BES to seamlessly switch over to the secondary database immediately in the event that the first database fails*.
