911 calling tips
Calling 911 from your wireless
phone
- During an emergency, always provide the operator with your complete
wireless phone number including area code.
- Tell the operator your location and the location of the emergency
you're reporting. Not all areas are equipped with Enhanced 911 service,
which assists an operator in pinpointing your location.
- Stay on the line with the operator. Remember, you aren't billed airtime
for 911 calls. If the call is disconnected, leave your phone powered
on in case the operator needs to call you back.
- Don't pre-program 911 on your wireless phone. This will reduce the
chance of making accidental calls to 911.
What is E911?
Enhanced 911, or E911, is a new service that allows emergency operators
to better assist people calling 911 from their wireless phones.
Phase One of E911 presents emergency operators with a wireless caller's
phone number and the location of the cellular site carrying the call.
Before the upgrade of emergency networks to E911, no phone number or location
information for wireless callers was available to operators, making it
impossible for them to re-dial a caller in case of a disconnection.
E911 availability
TELUS Mobility's E911 service is currently accessible in most of Alberta,
British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.
E911 is not yet available in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, PEI,
the Greater Halifax area of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and in some rural
areas of Ontario and Quebec due to limitations with landline network capabilities.
The local phone companies in some of these areas have not yet upgraded
their 911 switches with the technology necessary to allow wireless carriers
to support E911 enhancements.
Even if E911 is not yet available in your home region, you will be able
to access E911 when you roam into TELUS Mobility-supported E911 areas
as well as within other wireless carriers' E911 coverage areas across
Canada.
Enhanced 911 access charge
To accommodate the costs associated with the upgrade to Enhanced 911,
the standard 911 service charge for clients in E911 areas increased to
75 cents per month effective July 2006. For contract clients, the fee
took effect on contracts renewed as of July 2006 and onwards. The fee
appears on your invoice as "Enhanced 911 Access Charge."
